Garmin Vivosmart 5 and Vivosmart 4 Which is Better? Garmin Vivosmart 5 has officially launched and comes with several improvements from its predecessor. The Vivosmart 5 features a larger OLED display, interchangeable strap and physical buttons. This wearable comes in two sizes and has a battery that offers up to 7 days of activity.
With a 66% increase in screen size from its predecessor, the Garmin Vivosmart 5 now has a screen size of 10.5 mm x 18.5 mm. The screen has a resolution of 88 x 154 pixels. As such, its OLED panel offers more text display than the Vivosmart 4.
After testing Vivosmart 3 and Vivosmart 4 and both trackers had the same issue, i.e. display. The Vivosmart 3’s screen is blurry; it’s not easy to read in sunlight, and swiping isn’t easy to capture. The Vivosmart 4 fixed the blur, but its menu “buttons” didn’t always work and the touchscreen didn’t respond as it should. This makes starting and stopping activities tedious — especially with sweaty fingers.
What is the difference between Vivosmart 5 and Vivosmart 4?
The 2022 Vivosmart 5 is a refreshed version of the Vivosmart 4, which was first released in 2018. It largely retains the same design as the Vivosmart 4, but opts for a more practical and sporty look over a sleek vibe. The band itself has rounded edges and there’s no longer a metal rim surrounding the display. Garmin also emphasizes that the screen is 66 percent larger and has larger text for easier reading. The biggest difference, however, is that the Vivosmart 5 has real buttons and the swipe-based touchscreen is much easier to use.
The Garmin – Vivosmart 5 seems to have addressed both of these issues. Function lock and slightly lifted off the screen, making it easy to feel. Likewise, touch screens are much more sensitive and easier to use. This is by far a significant improvement on the biggest issue with the Garmin Vivosmart range.

Both look very different in terms of design, where Vivosmart 5 has a screen and physical design that is 66% larger than its predecessor. So that it is easier to read the existing text. The quality provided is still the same; it’s just that this Vivosmart 5 is in a larger size. Some Vivosmart 5 displays display data such as steps, heart rate, battery level, date, weather, calories burned, and intensity per minute by tapping it.
Both are swimproof and use a polycarbonate case. If the Vivosmart 4 has a frame made of aluminum bezels, the successor abandons that, but the screen is made of acrylic where the predecessor still uses polycarbonate.

While most of the Vivosmart 5 changes come down to design, Garmin has also added other software features. Namely, the Vivosmart 5 introduced an abnormal heart rate warning into the line of trackers. It also includes Garmin’s personal safety features. Pressing the button for a few seconds will trigger an additional alarm to the specified emergency contact. Otherwise, the Vivosmart 5 retains the continuous heart rate monitoring, SpO2 sensor, tethered GPS, stress tracking, and 7-day battery life of its predecessor.
